Praised by music critics, clarinetist Seunghee Lee has been reviewed as a "brilliant clarinetist" by the Fanfare Magazine, and the Clarinet Magazine of the International Clarinet Association has recognized her as "an uncompromising soloist destined to be an upcoming contender of top stature". Seunghee is a recipient of numerous national and international competitions and awards, including First Prize at both the International Clarinet Society Competition and the Saint Louis Symphony Young Artist Competition, judged by Leonard Slatkin, the Yale University Woolsey Hall Concerto Competition, finalist for the Olga Koussevitsky Competition, the Music Academy of the West Concerto Competition, and the Yale Alumni Award.
As an accomplished soloist and chamber musician, Seunghee has performed recitals and chamber music concerts in Hong Kong, Korea, New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Rochester, New Haven, Minneapolis, Santa Barbara and Sarasota where the Sarasota Herald-Tribune has reviewed her chamber music making as “outstanding". She has had solo appearances with Saint Louis Symphony, Metropolitan Symphony of Minneapolis, the Music Academy of the West Philharmonic, the Woodstock Wind Ensemble, the Jupiter Symphony of New York, and the Yale Philharmonia where she performed the Copland Clarinet Concerto conducted by Lawrence Leighton Smith. In addition, Seunghee has had solo performance with the Puchon Philharmonic Orchestra of South Korea where she served as principal clarinetist and was a frequent guest principal and section player with the Hong Kong Philharmonic.
Seunghee Lee’s live and recorded performances and interviews were broadcasted in numerous radio stations including KWMU in Saint Louis, RTHK4 in Hong Kong, KBS FM 1 in Seoul Korea, WFMT in Chicago, and KDFC in San Francisco. Due to her recently released debut album “Brava" with Summit Records, Seunghee was featured as “Top 30 Classical Stars Under 30" by KDFC which included an impressive list of 30 young classical musicians such as Sarah Chang, Midori, Evgeny Kissin, Hilary Hahn, and Maxim Vengerov.
In the summer of 1990, Seunghee was one of three American clarinetists chosen to represent the United States in the American-Soviet Youth Orchestra World Tour, led by Leonard Slatkin and Catherine Comet. This extensive world tour engagement took her to play concerts in Moscow, Estonia, Latvia, as well as at venues across the United States, including the Hollywood Bowl, Ravinia Festival and at the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol. In addition, she has performed in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands at Amsterdam’s Royal Concertegebouw.
Prior to the 1990 American-Soviet Youth Orchestra World Tour, Seunghee was engaged in an extensive concert tour of Japan with the Eastman Wind Ensemble, led by Donald Hunsberger. This Japan tour took her to perform in cities such as Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and to famous venues such as Suntory Hall and Symphony Hall.
Born in Seoul Korea, Seunghee Lee came to the United States at the age of nine. Growing up in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, a suburban area near Chicago, she first began her study of clarinet with her father at age twelve and won her first concerto competition at age sixteen. She received her Bachelor’s degree from Eastman School of Music under the tutelage of Charles Neidich and earned her Master’s degree and the Artist Diploma at Yale University, where she was a full-scholarship student of David Shifrin. Also, Seunghee feels privileged to have received teachings from Eli Eban, Peter Hadcock, Fred Ormand, George Silfies, Howard Klug, Laurie DeLuca and John Bruce Yeh of Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
Seunghee Lee has also recorded with the American-Soviet Youth Orchestra with Leonard Slatkin under RCA Victor Red Seal and with the Eastman Wind Ensemble with Donald Hunsberger under Sony Classics in Japan.
